How can we help?
Help with setting up Nivio and looking after your walks.
Getting started
Which phones does Nivio work on?
Android 10 or newer, with Google Play services and a built-in step counter. Most phones have one.
What does Nivio ask to allow, and why?
One setup screen asks for the three things Nivio needs to count all day:
- Physical activity, to count your steps and notice when you start walking.
- Notifications (Android 13 and newer), to keep Nivio running and show your steps and goal on the lock screen.
- Battery: Unrestricted, so your phone does not put Nivio to sleep.
Location for outdoor walks sits apart and is optional: it is used only during a walk, to map it and measure its distance, and setup goes on without it.
Until the three are on, a yellow Nivio needs access card stays on Today.
Do I need an account?
No. Nivio is free, with nothing to sign up for. After a short setup, it opens to Today.
Counting walks
My walks stop counting when the screen is off
Your phone is likely putting Nivio to sleep to save battery. Every phone needs it set to Unrestricted:
- On Today, tap Allow now on the yellow card, then Allow.
- Skipped it? Use the battery button in Profile › Tracking.
On Samsung, also add Nivio to Battery › Background usage limits › Never sleeping apps. Profile › Tracking marks each check with a ✓; fix anything without one.
How does a walk start and stop?
With the phone in your pocket, a walk starts by itself after about 40 steps. To map it from the first step, tap Start now on the Walk tab. It ends when you tap Finish, after about 10 still minutes, or after 2 minutes in a vehicle. Walks under 3 minutes are not kept, but their steps still count for today.
What happens when I pause, or stand still?
A pause lasts until you tap Continue; after an hour, the walk is saved. Standing still rests the clock until you move. In a vehicle, counting pauses until you walk again, though a slow, bumpy ride can add a few steps. If a walk ends by mistake, tap Continue in the notification.
Do I choose walking or running?
No. Nivio tells them apart by your pace, and a faster rhythm is saved as a run.
Why is Today’s step count higher than my walks?
Today counts your steps all day, in a walk or not, like moving around the house.
Why is there no map for my walk?
The map needs Use GPS outdoors on, enough good GPS points (indoor or very short walks may have none), and an internet connection to load. After your phone restarts, open Nivio once so the next walks get their map.
My distance looks wrong without GPS
Without GPS, distance comes from your step length. Set it in Profile › About you: tap Measure 20 metres and walk it, or type it in. Your steps and goal do not use it.
Your data
How do I back up or move my walks?
In Profile › Your data, tap Export my data and keep the file safe. On the new phone, tap Import a backup there and pick it; its walks and days join the ones already on that phone. There is no cloud backup, so export before you reset or switch phones.
I used the earlier Nivio build. How do I keep my walks?
- In the earlier app, open Profile › Health and data › Export, and save the file.
- Install Nivio from Google Play and finish setup.
- On Today, under Bring your walks over, tap Import walks and pick the file.
- Tap Open app info and uninstall the earlier app, so only one app counts your steps.
How do I delete all my data?
Profile › Your data › Erase all Nivio data removes every walk and profile detail, as does uninstalling. We hold no copy, so there is nothing to delete on our side. See the privacy policy.
Can I use Nivio in my own language?
Yes: English, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Spanish, French, Arabic or Chinese, set in Profile › Appearance whatever your phone’s language. Text size and theme are there too.
